We love a beautiful front porch don’t we! If it’s a wrap around porch that seems to have no end, that’s even better. But, those of us with a smaller footprint can create a warm welcoming entrance as well. Here I’ll share some ideas for front porch container gardening.

Ideas for Front Porch Flower Containers

• ceramic pots
• vintage iron topiaries
• galvanized wall pockets
• basket containers – hanging or otherwise

Ceramic Flower Containers

This most common flower container for porches is a ceramic flower pot. The chances of finding the exact pot in the exact color you desire are pretty great. Who would have believed I’d find the perfect coral to match my front door? But, I did, and you can as well.

The only reason to choose a neutral color ceramic concrete or resin flower container is because that’s what you want.

Vintage Iron Topiaries as Flower Container

While running to one of the local hardware stores to purchase flowers, I spotted these iron topiaries. Located right beside the Nuts and Bolts hardware store, is a thrift store. These beauties were right out front and caught my eye immediately. Here’s the shape they were in when I found them.

When I discovered the spheres were iron and not rotten wood, I envisioned their new lease on life. Might I add that it was 1/2 price day–you just can’t beat a sale at the thrift store.

Galvanized Wall Pocket Flower Container

I found the vintage piece of ladder in Lawrence, Kansas a couple of springs ago!  For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kansas,  Lawrence is the home of my son for about 4 years (and also the JAYHAWKS). TtG, Jr. and I were shopping on Mass Street during my first KU Moms Weekend. He sincerely likes to pick through Antique Shops like his Mom! The ladder provided a great spot for the galvanized tin flower pocket. A low maintenance vine is easily placed just inside.

Basket Containers – Hanging or Otherwise

The upside to using baskets as flower containers is that they are relatively inexpensive. The downside to using them is that they don’t last forever. If you line them with plastic, and a good layer of drainage materials like rock, you can get a few years beauty from them. I say they are worth a go for the natural beauty.

Front Porch Dreaming

While we’re talking porches, earlier this year ,while visiting my family in Tennessee, I had to pull the car over, and capture this image of a home on… yes… Main Street that screamed “Well, howdy, Southern Nell”!  

I love this front porch: screen door, wicker rocking chairs, ferns, window boxes brimming with petunias, porch swing, American flag. It really has ALL the southern charm!

Just look at the beautiful snowball bushes (No, that’s not the official name, it’s what my great Aunt Sybil called the one on her front lawn!). Can you imagine some sweet tea, a magazine, and hours on that porch swing?

And then, there’s THE greatest front porch swing of all time. This one is located at my Mom and Dad’s home of 30+ years.

Talk about memories! This swing has been the location of so many peaceful moments, deep conversations, and family bonding sessions throughout the years.

This wreath and attached sign is one of my fun creations. I made it with quilting hoops, faux greens, and blush colored sunflowers.
